Merging State Names

Saturday, January 27th, 2007 @ 11:15 pm

mapAround the edges of Indiana there is an annoying marketing ploy where they merge Indiana with the name of the neigboring state. We have Illiana, Michiana, and Kentuckiana. Fortunately there isn’t a combination of Indiana and Ohio that doesn’t sound completely stupid. These commercials are usually foisted on us by car companies. Your Illiana Ford dealers. Your Michiana Chevy dealers. Your Kentuckiana Hay Wagon dealers. I started to wonder if other stated and industries do this. If not they should.

California/Arizona - Calizona for a sandwich shop

Vermont/Maine - Vermaine for exterminators

Nevada/Arizona - Nezona for rhinoplasty

Washington/Oregon - Washingon for appliance repair

Mississippi/Louisiana - MisianaMissana… I’ll come back to this

Tennessee/Kentucky - Tennesucky ummm, let’s go with vacuum cleaners

Iowa/Minnesota - Iota it wouldn’t make a bit of difference who used this

Virginia/Maryland - Virginland feel free to make your own joke

OK, what did I miss?

    Texarkana !

isn’t Texarkana, actually a town as well as confluence of the states names?

    How about kansorado? Dakotasota? Wisconigan?

  5. mike Says:

I like the sound of Dakotasota. Except now my brain insists on trying to turn it into a Schoolhouse Rock jingle.

    Dakotastoa what’s your quota…

Yeah, it doesn’t quite work, but it will be stuck in my head for days now.

  7. What about Pennsylhioiana? : Rinsem’s Rink Says:

[...] Aparently some marketing geniuses in Indiana have come up with names for their respective regions. Areas bordering other states have begun to refer to themselves as a combination of the two states. For example Illiana, Michiana, and Kentuckiana. Thankfully we don’t have to deal with that here in Western Pennsylvania as that would end up as something like Pennsylhioiana. I much prefer the Tri-State area when refering to this region - That I can handle. [...]
