Different Concepts of Winter
Tuesday, January 30th, 2007 @ 5:59 pm
I’m constantly amazed and amused at the different concepts of bad winter weather. Right now it’s 15 degrees in west central Indiana and the low tonight will be in the single digits. Being February, we think this is perfectly normal. The news of course plays it up a little bit mentioning the “arctic blast” or “bitter cold”, but for the most part we just put on a sweater and go about our business.
Right now, I’m in Charlotte, NC. It’s 50 degrees. The low is going to be about 22 tonight with a high of 37 tomorrow and it may snow on Thursday. That doesn’t sound bad to me at all. In Indiana we would call this Spring. But I’m watching the local news and you would think the end of the world was upon us. I haven’t been by a grocery yet, but I’m betting there is a run on milk and bread right now (which is a whole other post). Hopefully we can all get dug out before that 50+ degree weather returns Friday.
Oh, and contrary to popular opinion, I did not bring this weather with me.

My husband is from Texas and I’m from Indiana. We have different views on what cold is.

I can imagine. In my experience, Texans tend to have a similar view on heat.
What do you mean hot? It’s only 98 out here. In Dallas we call this morning.

Yeah you’re right. In North Georgia, the news was showing people stocking up on milk and DVD : )

50 degrees! Oh you lucky thing, it’s -4 here and due to get colder.
I know what you mean about the different perceptions of cold though. I live in the north of England where snow, ice and sub-zeros temperatures are the norm in winter. A week ago the south of England got an inch of snow and ground to a halt. If we get an inch we thinks ‘it’s a little bit chilly’ and go about our business as normal.
